Livingston is a small city of 6,000 people on the Caribbean coast of Guatemala

This small village is dominated by fishing and tourism and revolves around it lovely sea shore.
We rode for 6 hours in vans and then 30 more minutes in a boat to reach Livingston.

There is no way to get there by car!

Guatemala is the northeastern end of Central America. We flew into the capital, Guatemala City, a bustling hub of 3 million people.
Our trip to Livingston was a quick dash. The return two weeks later was more leisurely, including a half-day boat ride on the Rio Dulce, and a day to explore Antigua, the seat of traditional Guatemalan culture.
Both tradition and a decade of economic development efforts have built a thriving fishing industry in Livingston. The woman on the left shows a fish ready for cleaning. The fish on the right are drying in the sun.

Main street in Livingston is lined with diverse shops like the colorful general store above.
Livingston attracts hearty tourists, many of them on extended backpacking trips throughout Guatemala and Central America.

The overriding tone in Livingston is "laid-back"
Livingston is a mix of the Garifuna people, the traditional Guatemalan Mayan and Ladino cultures, and a generous sprinkling of Asians.
